The Project for Collecting Historic Data of Elderly Scientists' Academic Life Base

On 2, July 2010, China Association for Science and Technology and Beijing Institute of Technology formally signed a cooperation agreement to jointly build the "The Project for Collecting Historic Data of Elderly Scientists' Academic Life Base" (hereinafter referred to as "the Base"). In order to fully demonstrate the achievements of the elderly scientists’ academic life  and play an indispensable role in academic, historical and social development, it is responsible for the permanent preservation and management of elderly scientists’ academic growth information, display and dissemination of elderly scientists’ academic ideas and essence, and provide access to information to meet the needs of the public. Moreover, it is also an important place for the overwhelming majority of scientific and technological workers, historians and archivists to obtain and utilize the information.

The Base is physical space with an integration of shortage, display, research and education, which is located on the fourth floor on the Beijing Institute of Technology Library. It is characterized by constant temperature and humidity, gas extinguishing system and closed-circuit monitoring environment and has the capacity for digital processing and multimedia display. It can also develop a resource management system and finish the data release.

The Base is mainly responsible for the check of the collected academic growth data of elderly scientists, reorganization and shortage, database construction and maintenance and some display work. After five years of construction, the collection base has developed into an integration of shortage, display, research and digital processing, which is the first collection base concerning scientists in China. The Base has preserved a wide range of collected data of historical and research value. Up to the end of 2015, the information of 294 scientists and two scientists group entered into the collection base, including a total of 75345 pieces of original material, 204890 articles of digital data, 272083 minutes of video data (4534 hours), and 313709 minutes of audio data (5228 hours). Thus, it finished the preservation and protection of the academic achievements and scientific ideology of the outstanding elderly scientists, which has drawn the huge attention from the scientific and technological circles and historic research field, both at home and abroad. Now it has completed the catalogue of all types of information of the collection project in quick succession and the information has gradually been released in the joint directory of the collection project.(http://10.1.120.58/TPI/Default.aspx.
